The Deadly Waterway Named Bolton Strid

A section of the River Wharf named Bolton Strid in North Yorkshire, UK is a picturesque stretch of waterway that bubbles along and looks altogether quite inviting.

Looks can be deceiving however. Beneath the surface lies a natural booby trap that has claimed many lives over the years.

The danger comes from the fact that the river runs between two banks of mossy boulders, and is more like a stream at this point.

Unfortunately individuals have stepped into the water here, and before they realise what has happened they have traveled upstream to where the water becomes deadly.

There the waterway expands into a wide river, some 30-feet across with under-currents and frothing waves.

The deceptively deep and powerful current, has carved out an area beneath the shore rocks to create a void where debris (and people) in the water can become trapped.

While full statistics on how many people have perished in the Strid are unavailable, it is said in local legend that all that have dared enter have not made it out alive.

Thankfully, there are now signs up all around river’s edge warning of the hidden dangers. It really is a case of entering at your own risk, (and stupidity).
